Kevin Love’s 51st straight double-double sets new NBA record
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, NBA, News,
Despite losing to the Dallas Mavericks 108-105, the Minnesota Timberwolves' Kevin Love set an NBA single-season record by posting his 51st consecutive double-double. Love broke the tie he shared with NBA Hall of Famer Moses Malone, scoring 23 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. If the T-Wolves did well to any degree this season, Love would be an MVP candidate, however, they are not and are once again on pace to be one of the lesser teams in the NBA. Love, along with Michael Beasley are the main highlights this season. Rookie Wes Johnson has come on of late and if the team can get any cohesiveness, maybe they can elevate their game as Love clearly has. To think that the team was criticized for trading O.J. Mayo to the Memphis Grizzlies for Love after the 2008 NBA Draft.

Charlie Sheen and Mark Cuban possibly to team up
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: NBA, News,
The man the media can't help but talk about, Charlie Sheen, and Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban, are in talks to have Sheen do a show on Cuban's cable network HDNet. Conversations are still ongoing, so if Sheen in fact signs on with Cuban's network, it could be anything from a reality show to Sheen being a game show host, which would be interesting when he tells such and such player that he or she is "winning." There will probably be some tough competition though for Cuban as competing networks may throw their hat into the Charlie Sheen ring because of his fame, which has grown exponentially lately. Proof of that is Sheen being the fastest ever to get one million followers on Twitter (a little over 25 hours). This could be another thing that Cuban chases, but doesn't happen.

How about those Miami Heat?
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, Editorial, NBA, News,
There was much ballyhoo before the NBA season began regarding the joining of Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Bosh forming a "super team" with the Miami Heat. In fact, speculation abounded on whether or not they could surpass the 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls' NBA-record 72 wins. At 43-19 as of this writing, obviously, it's a dead issue like the team's seeming spirit. They have lost four of their last five, all to playoff teams - Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Orlando Magic, San Antonio Spurs - and the Pat Riley taking over for Erik Spoelstra whispers have reared their ugly head yet again.

Coco Crisp joins lengthening list of DUI arrests
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
If you’ve ever thought professional baseball players were your idols, you should pick up a newspaper. On Feb. 12, Cleveland’s Austin Kearns was arrested on DUI charges. Four day’s later Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera was arrested for the same thing. If that wasn’t enough, Oakland’s Coco Crisp was arrested in Scottsdale, Ariz. last Wednesday for – you guessed it – “driving under the influence.” It’s been a busy spring already for the players and apparently likewise for police.

There’s a method to Dale Tallon’s madness
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Rumors, Trades,
Now that the NHL trade deadline has passed and we’ve had a chance to let the dusts (or lack of dust) settle, it’s good to see hockey is once again the focus of the hockey world. It’s also good to see that many of the recently-moved players are already on the scoresheets. Jason Arnott assisted on Brooks Laich’s third period goal in his first game with Washington, Bryan McCabe also has an assist with his new New York team, and even Cory Stillman scored for the Carolina Hurricanes, at the expense of his former Florida Panthers.

What is going on with Richard Hamilton and the Detroit Pistons?
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, Front Office, NBA, News,
According to reports, the disgruntled Richard Hamilton could have been traded away from the Detroit Pistons, but refused to do so. Instead he stayed with the team and remained in head coach John Kuester's dog house on the bench. It's been a bad situation for Hamilton as he hasn't played much this whole season due to disagreements with Kuester. In fact, the Hamilton has gotten in the Kuester's face and yelled profanities while Kuester did nothing, but take it.

Kendrick Perkins traded away from the Boston Celtics: Good or Bad?
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, NBA, News, Playoffs, Trades,
The Boston Celtics traded Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic, as well as a first round pick in 2012 that belonged to the Los Angeles Clippers. Is this move by the Celtics beneficial or detrimental? Perkins was an integral part of the Celtics' recent runs in the playoffs that saw them reach the NBA Finals in two of the past three seasons, including one NBA title. In fact, many think that if he hadn't gotten hurt during last year's NBA Finals, the outcome would have been different where the Celtics defeat the Los Angeles Lakers.

Adam Wainwright suffers an elbow injury
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, Injuries, MLB, News,
The St. Louis Cardinals suffered a big blow to their success when it was reported that pitcher Adam Wainwright has a possible serious elbow injury and could miss the entire 2011 season. Saying that the loss of Wainwright is damaging to the Cardinals is an understatement as he's won 39 games the past two seasons, including 20 games in 2010, finishing with a 2.42 ERA and 213 strikeouts, as well as second in the voting for National League Cy Young, which Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies won. Wainwright is in the middle of his prime at 29-years-old, so losing a season hurts if it comes to that. However, he's still young enough to recover from elbow surgery, most likely Tommy John surgery if he needs to go under the knife. He's in the middle of getting a second opinion before surgery becomes a tangible option.

Deron Williams traded to the New Jersey Nets
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, NBA, News, Trades,
The New Jersey Nets pulled off a coup by trading for Deron Williams of the Utah Jazz for Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, and two first round draft picks. The picks are the Nets' 2011 first round pick and the Golden State Warrior's 2012 first round pick, which the Nets received in the Marcus Williams trade. After a seven-month long serenade of Carmelo Anthony and ultimately failing, the Nets acted quickly in acquiring Williams, the superstar they hope to be the face of the franchise as they move into the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The hope is that Williams' presence will help lure other superstar free agents, particularly Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic who can opt out of his contract after the 2011-12 season. The Nets hope that Williams is only the first step in many to come.

Ryan Dempster takes reigns from Carlos Zambrano as Opening Day starter
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
The new-look Chicago Cubs under the helm of manager Mike Quade have answered one of their many Spring Training questions on Monday: who will be their Opening Day starting pitcher? Since 2004 the team has handed the ball to Carlos Zambrano, but he’ll pass the “ace” designation to long-time teammate Ryan Dempster come April 1. Newly-acquired Matt Garza was also a long shot for the job, but seniority won out and Garza will act as the number three in the rotation.
